Camp Verde Fire District Governing Board

Steve Darby, Member

Steve is an Arizona native and graduate of Camp Verde High School. He currently serves the board as the Chairperson and is elected to a 4 year term. Steve began his fire service career with the Flagstaff Fire Department and later served and retired from the City of Mesa Fire Department. He also worked many years as a paramedic with an air ambulance service on his days off from the fire department. More recently he obtained his General Contractor license and has built nearly 50 custom homes and commercial buildings mainly in the Phoenix area. Steve currently teaches fire science at local high schools and Yavapai College. Steve is married with two daughters. His term expires November 2018. Stevedarby

George Kleindienst, Chair Person


George was born and raised in Winslow, AZ and has spent nearly his entire life in Northern Arizona. He started as a forest firefighter in 1973 as a seasonal hire and worked on 6 different forests throughout his career. George retired after spending 26 years with the Forest Service. He worked on 4 different hotshot crews over 10 years then entered in to management positions where he continued fighting fires on Type 1 & 2 Incident Management teams. His last job was the Assistant Fire Management Officer for the Coconino & Kaibab National Forests, which is now called the Deputy Chief of Fire Management.
After retirement, George spent 5 years as a Wildland Fire Management consultant working for state, federal, county and city agencies preparing various fire management plans. Before moving to Camp Verde in 2009 he served 5 years on the Highlands Fire District board. His term expires November 2016.

David Curtis, Clerk

Dave was born in San Diego, California and raised in National City California. He arrived in Arizona in 1978 after serving three years in the US Army. Dave started his fire service career in 1979 as a hotshot with the Prescott National Forest and later that year was hired with the Central Yavapai Fire District in Prescott Valley where he spent the next 29 years. He retired as the Fire Chief from Central Yavapai Fire District in 2007. In 2010 Dave moved to Camp Verde with his wife, Louise, who is a native of Camp Verde, to be closer to most of their ten grandkids. Dave currently volunteers with the American Red Cross on both a local and national level where he has responded to several major disasters. In addition to volunteering for the Red Cross, Dave is an avid cyclist and amateur radio operator. His term expires November 2018. Photo Coming Soon

Gwen Gunnell, Member


Gwen Gunnell, an Arizona native, moved to Camp Verde in 1964 with her husband Don and family. Involvement in business ownership and community services has provided her with years of management experiences. Gwen has served as a board member on the Yavapai County Work Force Investment Board and on the Verde Valley Concert Association and as chairperson of the Camp Verde Library Commission and on the Arizona Library Friends. She assisted in the establishment of the Camp Verde Adult Education and Enrichment Program and served as director for 20 years.
Her husband Don joined the department as a volunteer in 1966 beginning 30 years of service as a fire fighter and fire chief providing Gwen with firsthand knowledge of district operations. Gwen continues to reside in Camp Verde. Her term expires November 2018.

Linda Welsch, Member

As lifelong volunteer and resident of Camp Verde since 1994, Linda has served on various boards and commissions in Camp Verde including Parks and Recreation Commission, Trails and Pathways Committee, CVFD Auxiliary and Camp Verde Little League along with other youth sports organizations. Currently, Linda volunteers for the local Salvation Army, and writes and administers grants for a neighboring fire district.Although Linda is a former District employee, her knowledge of emergency response and firefighting began thirty years ago when she married her husband, John, who is a current fire chief. To complete their firefighting family, two of their three sons are professional firefighters. lindawelsch
It is an honor for Linda to serve on the CVFD Board where she can actively participate in assisting the members of the District in providing the highest level of emergency response services. Her term expires November 2016.
